Greg
was born in Albuquerque and has loved New Mexico through four generations.
He received a BFA in Technical Theatre and Design from Eastern New
Mexico University in Portales, and after stage management work in
London, he came to Santa Fe to work for Shakespeare in Santa Fe.
During his five years with Shakespeare, he worked for Captain Marble,
a stone fabrication shop in Santa Fe. There he discovered the beautiful
colors that granite had to offer, and his artistic eye took over.
Greg started making small table fountains in his spare time, along
with clocks, boxes and inlay artwork. This was the foundation of
Rock Steady Designs, and today Greg builds water walls, sculpted
water features and dry sculptures, almost always out of Granite.
Granite is amazing stone. It comes from all over the world. It is
much harder than limestone or marble, and almost any color can be
found. It is the color that makes granite so exciting to work with.
Greg often will pick the color of a stone before he starts to design
a piece. Oftentimes there are spectacular swirls and speckles that
make a particular stone unique. If he can make a stone artistically
stand on its own, he will, but Greg also likes to explore the contrast
between polish and rough, flat and carved, and mixing different
stones in one piece. Since this work began in a countertop fabrication
shop, most of the pieces used are remnants; scrap pieces found in
the stone yards. As opposed to drilling blocks of stone, Greg will
laminate pieces together to get a certain thickness. This also allows
for very small detail pieces, only ¾ of an inch thick, which
would otherwise have to be carved down. He would like to play with
blocks of stone in the future, but there is so much to be recycled, and that
in turn helps to create new ideas.
Greg lives in Santa Fe after several years of living and working in pecos, New mexico.
